June: UC Irvine’s Academic Senate endorses the creation of a College of Health Sciences to include new programs in pharmaceutical sciences and public health.
September: The programs in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Public Health are established.
January: Frank L. Meyskens Jr., M.D., is named Senior Associate Dean of Health Sciences
September: The University of California’s Board of Regents approves the creation of the College of Health Sciences and the renaming of the College of Medicine as the School of Medicine.
November: Undergraduate majors in Public Health Sciences and in Public Health Policy are approved.
January: The Program in Nursing Science is established.
September: The California Board of Registered Nursing Education/Licensing approves the undergraduate major curriculum in Nursing Science.
September: The first undergraduate students enroll in Nursing Science, Public Health and Pharmaceutical Sciences majors.
December: Chemistry professor Richard Chamberlin accepts Chair position of the proposed Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
April: Dr. David N. Bailey becomes vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine.
June: Meyskens is named associate vice chancellor of the College of Health Sciences to oversee the programs in Nursing, Pharmaceutical Science and Public Health.
June: The first graduates receive bachelor's degrees in Public Health.
July: Ellen F. Olshansky becomes founding director of UC Irvine’s Program in Nursing Science.
July: Pharmaceutical Sciences gains departmental status.
October: A doctoral program in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology is approved in conjunction with the departments of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Pharmacology and Molecular Biology & Biochemistry.
June: The Department of Population Health and Disease Prevention is established within the Program in Public Health. Oladele Ogunseitan is named chair.
June: Ogunseitan is named founding director of the Green Materials Program, a University of California initiative to develop nontoxic alternatives to commercial products. UC Irvine is designated the lead campus.
June: Master’s-degree programs in Nursing Science and Public Health are approved by the University of California Office of the President.
September: The first Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology graduate students enroll.
April: Nursing Science begins offering Clinical Nurse Educator seminars to train working nurses in the instruction of students in clinical settings.
May: Nursing Science wins accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The five-year accreditation is the longest allowed for new programs.
June: Nursing Science graduates 36 in its inaugural class of bachelor’s-degree nurses.
September: Public Health and Nursing Science enroll their first master’s-degree candidates.
