Dr. Lisa Grant Discusses “The Great Shakeout”

Today@UCI profiles Dr. Lisa Grant Ludwig, professor of public health and earthquake researcher, as she discusses earthquake preparedness and “The Great Shakeout,” the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history. UCI will be participating in the drill, to be held at 10am on Thursday, November 13th along with millions of schools, homes, and businesses across Southern California.

Thirsting for Answers

The work of Dr. Dele Ogunseitan was featured in the latest issue of Interface, the magazine of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). The article, entitled “Thirsting for Answers,” discusses efforts to maintain and improve the quality and quantity of the world’s water supply.

Ogunseitan Designated Director of Green Materials Program

June 2, 2008. Prof. Dele Ogunseitan, UCI Professor of Public Health and Social Ecology was designated as Inaugural Director of the $1.62 Million UCI Green Materials Program to lead a statewide program on the development of nontoxic alternatives to commercial products. Lotfipour Appointed as Asst. Dean Clinical Science Education

Shahram Lotfipour, MD, MPH, FAAEM, FACEP, has been appointed as the Assistant Dean Clinical Science Education and Program Director of the proposed, combined MD/MPH program effective May 1, 2008. As the Assistant Dean Clinical Science Education, Dr. Lotfipour will assume the role as Clinical Foundations Course Director, Content Themes Coordinator and will oversee the integration of LCME Hot Topics into the curriculum. Dr. Lotfipour has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards including the medical student Excellence in Teaching award for 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Bic Wins 2008 Lecturer of the Year Award

Congratulations to Zuzana Bic who has been selected to receive the 2008 Lecturer of the Year Award at the 16th annual Celebration of Teaching. Dr. Bic will be honored in an event that will take place on Thursday, May 22, 2008 from 4:30-6:00 in the University Club Dining Room. Stern and Public Health Student Elizabeth Posten Win Upper Division Writing Award

Congratulations to Shari Stern, Sr. Lecturer and Public Health student Elizabeth Poston who are this year's recipients of the 2007-2008 Upper Division Excellence in Writing award in the Science and Technology category. The event was sponsored and announced by the Division of Undergraduate Education and the Office of the Campus Writing Coordinator on April 24, 2007.

 Mind-Body Connection for Cancer Survivors

A study relating to the importance of "mind-body" connection for cancer survivors by Lari Wenzel, Associate Professor, Program in Public Health and Dr. Edward Nelson, Assistant Professor, the Department of Medicine, will be be apprearing in the April issue of Clinical Cancer Research. Results of this study will also be featured in Orange County's Coast Magazine in May.
