ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FNP CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Individuals seeking admission to the Family Nurse Practitioner program must meet the conditions listed below in order to apply as a post-master’s candidate. Incomplete applications are not accepted.
- Master’s degree in nursing required; Master’s degree in other areas considered
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in California
- A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale
- Three years of recent clinical experience in nursing, five years preferred
- Three letters of recommendation: one from current clinical position, one from an educator, one from a physician or current clileague
- Two job performance evaluations: one must come from the applicant’s most recent employer
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support
- Negative Tubercolin test within one (1) year of application date or Chest x-ray within past four (4) years
- Evidence of immunity to Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella
- Participate in an interview with program facolty or Director of the FNP program
- Evidence of proficiency in the English language--both written and verbal
- Application fee of $150.00 for Post-Master’s Program, made payable to UC REGENTS
Additionally Each Student:
- Must maintain current licensure as a registered nurse in California and must submit evidence of such licensure to the program. If licensure expires, the student will be placed on leave of absence until evidence of current licensure is presented. If a student is accruing clinical hours, hours will not be counted while licensure is expired. A student may be required to repeat hours that were completed after current RN license expired.
- Must possess and present to the program evidence of malpractice insurance as a student Nurse Practitioner prior to beginning clinical rotations.
- Must ensure that renewed licenses, CPR certification, malpractice insurance, and immunization information are made available to the UCI Nursing Science Student Affairs Office Students may be placed on probation and removed from clinical placements for failure to do so.
- Will be prepared to take a National Certification exam as a Family Nurse Practitioner through either the ANCC or AANP upon program completion.
Transfer Policy
Transfer into the FNP program from another program may be accommodated if the following criteria are met:
- The student must have already received their master’s degree from an accredited program in Nursing.
- Transfer student must be from a Nurse Practitioner training program accredited by the NLN or CCNE, California BRN, or the BRN from the state in which the program is located.
- Courses from the program must have been passed with a grade of B or better and must have been completed no earlier than 18 months prior to transfer.
- The aggregate time in the course of study from the program of transfer and the remainder of the time at UCI must be 11 months.
- Students are required to apply for admission and must meet the aforementioned admission requirements.
