On September 23, 2009 the Program in Nursing Science held its third annual White Coat Ceremony, an event to honor the incoming undergraduate Nursing Science class of 2011 and the inaugural class of graduate MSN students. Students received white laboratory coats after being honored by UCI faculty. The Mary Hannacker Scholarship Award and the Elizabeth C. Tierney Nursing Scholarship were presented to two undergraduate students and six graduate students received Helen Russell Scholarship Awards and have been designated as Helen Russell Scholars.

On June 14, 2009 the Program in Nursing Science held its Inaugural Pinning Ceremony recognizing the first graduating class of nursing students. The event was held at the UC Irvine Student Center culminating with the traditional pinning, an important rite-of-passage into the profession of nursing. Dressed in their white coats, the 36 graduates were presented a custom designed UCI pin by program director Ellen Olshansky and associate director Ellen Lewis, and congratulated by Nursing Science Faculty.
